Love Is Active

“As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
John 13:34b-35

Love is not passive, it is active. We show our love to our brothers and sisters by how we serve them. If we are not involved to the extent our talents and capabilities allow in taking care of each other spiritually and physically, we are failing at love. If we are not providing for those who are hungry, homeless, imprisoned, living in poverty, we are failing at love. Love requires of each of us to actively take care of our brothers and sisters, especially those in need.

Love isn’t always easy. Jesus commands us to love even our enemies. We need to rely on the Holy Spirit to give us strength in love to equip us to love EVERYONE as we know God loves us.

“Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?

I will, with God’s help.”

The Book of Common Prayer, pages 304-305
